From Kosa’aay to New Town
San Diego grew from Kosa’aay, a Kumeyaay village of thirty to forty families beside a freshwater spring in what is now Old Town. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the bay for Spain in 1542 and called it San Miguel; in 1602 Sebastián Vizcaíno renamed it for Saint Didacus, San Diego de Alcalá. In May 1769 Gaspar de Portolá founded the Presidio on the hill above the village, the first European settlement in what is now California, and Junípero Serra’s mission followed that July. The city incorporated in 1850 and went bankrupt two years later. In the late 1860s Alonzo Horton pulled the town down to the bay, and his New Town became today’s downtown, though San Diego stayed a quiet port until the railroad arrived in 1878. More than 1.4 million people now live in what has become the eighth-largest city in the country.

Canyons, towers and teams
Much of the city sits on mesas split by canyons, so the nearest cross street and which rim you are on help most. Downtown towers need the building and unit, hotels need the room number, and for a group one person books and prepays one IV while everyone else pays when the nurse arrives.
