Mobile IV Therapy in the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego

The Gaslamp Quarter began as New Town. In 1850 William Heath Davis bought 160 acres here, but little came of it until 1867, when Alonzo Horton arrived, paid $265 for 800 acres closer to the bay than Old Town, and made 5th Avenue his main street. From the 1880s to 1916 the district was the Stingaree, a working-class quarter with San Diego’s first Chinatown, Soapbox Row and a long run of saloons and gambling halls, until anti-vice campaigners tore much of it down and renamed it. Decline followed, and by the 1950s it was a sailors’ entertainment strip. Preservation took hold in the 1970s: the city adopted a design manual in 1976, redevelopment began in earnest in 1982, and the Gaslamp Quarter archway went up in 1992. Today more than 90 historic buildings, most of them Victorian, stand between Broadway and Harbor Drive, and despite the name, the streets were mostly lit by arc lights.
