Nine counties, one bay
In November 1769, scouts of the Portolá expedition looked out from the ridges above today's Pacifica, and the party made the first recorded European sighting of San Francisco Bay. On November 29, 1777, the Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe was founded as California's first civilian settlement, and after statehood San Jose served as the state's first capital. The strait at the bay's mouth was named in 1846, before the Gold Rush, when John C. Frémont called it Chrysopylae, the Golden Gate, after the Golden Horn of Byzantium. To the south, orchards made the Santa Clara Valley the Valley of Heart's Delight, until a 1971 trade-paper story, "Silicon Valley U.S.A.," helped give it a new name. Yes. Book one appointment and prepay for one IV; the others pay at the visit.
