Intralipid Infusion for IVF: A Comprehensive Guide

What is Intralipid IV Therapy?

Intralipid is an intravenous lipid emulsion that some fertility specialists use for women with recurrent pregnancy loss or implantation failure. The infusion contains a mixture of soybean oil, egg yolk phospholipids, glycerin, and water.

How Does Intralipid IV Therapy Work?

Intralipid is a lipid emulsion used by some fertility specialists as an IVF add-on. Researchers have studied possible effects on immune activity, including natural killer cells, but the mechanism and which patients may benefit are not established.

Who Can Benefit from Intralipid IV Therapy?

A fertility specialist may consider Intralipid for selected patients with recurrent pregnancy loss or repeated failed embryo transfers after reviewing their individual history and treatment plan. ASAP IVs can coordinate an infusion with your reproductive endocrinologist.

What Can You Expect During Intralipid IV Therapy?

Intralipid IV therapy is administered through a small needle in the arm and takes approximately 60-120 minutes to complete. The infusion is typically given before embryo transfer during an IVF cycle and may also be given during early pregnancy for women with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss.

Side effects of Intralipid IV therapy are generally mild and may include fever, chills, and nausea. Serious side effects are rare but can occur in individuals with a history of allergy to egg products.

Intralipid IV therapy may be an option for women with recurrent pregnancy loss or multiple failed IVF cycles, when recommended by their fertility specialist.

Intralipid IV Therapy Protocol at ASAP IVs

Based on the published research (see our article on Intralipid therapy for IVF), we have begun offering the convenience of our IV therapy services at ASAP IVs with this intralipid therapy. We are happy to work in conjunction with your Reproductive Endocrinologist to help you receive the care that you need. Our protocol is modeled after the higher dosed intralipid treatments (this was decided after studies showed less effect in the lower dose groups) and is as follows:

1. 100mL of 20% Intralipid Emulsion Therapy diluted into 250mL or 500mL IV Fluid (Normal Saline or Lactated ringers)

2. IV access is established and the therapy is started. The infusion will take approximately 60-120 minutes, depending on patient comfort (side effects are uncommon and usually mild). You will be monitored for safety and comfort during this time.

3. IV Intralipid can be done in conjunction with the discussions with your Reproductive Endocrinologist based on desired timing, or can be scheduled 1-7 days before your Embryo transfer.
