Mobile IV Therapy in North Park, San Diego

North Park began with lemons. In 1893 James Monroe Hartley bought 40 acres from Joseph Nash and tried to grow a lemon grove, calling his land Hartley’s North Park; years later the city adopted the shorter name for the new suburb. In 1905 Jack Hartley and William Jay Stevens opened the neighborhood’s first real estate firm, and in 1912 they put up the Stevens building at 30th Street and University Avenue, North Park’s first “high rise.” After the Panama–California Exposition of 1915, streetcars backed by John D. Spreckels linked the neighborhood to the rest of the city until they were retired in 1949. Craftsman houses and California bungalows filled the blocks around Morley Field, many designed by David Owen Dryden, and in 2011 the city approved a Dryden Historic District with 104 contributing homes. The North Park sign at 30th and University still marks the heart of it all.
