Del Mar, Spanish for “of the sea,” began with the railroad. The California Southern line was planned up this coast in the early 1880s, and in 1882 railroad official Theodore M. Loop and his wife Ella settled here; Ella named the place after Bayard Taylor’s poem “The Fight of Paso del Mar.” In 1885 Colonel Jacob Taylor bought 338 acres to build a seaside resort for the rich and famous, but his Casa del Mar hotel burned in a kitchen fire and the town closed the century with fewer than a hundred people. After 1905 the South Coast Land Company revived it around the Tudor-style Stratford Inn, a favorite of Hollywood’s silent-film stars. The San Diego County Fair moved to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in 1936, horse racing followed in 1937, and in 1959 residents incorporated to keep the small-town feel; about 4,000 people live here today.
