Encinitas is named for its oaks. On the Portolá expedition of 1769, Gaspar de Portolá met Kumeyaay people from the village of Jeyal near San Elijo Lagoon and called the valley Los Encinos for the oak woods along El Camino Real. In 1842 Andrés Ybarra received Rancho Las Encinitas, “little oaks,” in what is now Olivenhain and New Encinitas. Jabez Pitcher formed the town of Old Encinitas in 1881, and German families homesteaded the Olivenhain Colony late in the century. The La Paloma Theatre opened on Coast Highway 101 in 1928, and in 1937 Paramahansa Yogananda founded the Self-Realization Fellowship ashram on the bluff above the surf break known as Swamis. In 1986 voters joined Old and New Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain into one city of about 20 square miles between Batiquitos and San Elijo lagoons, now home to some 62,000 people.
