Point Loma is where California began. On September 28, 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay and probably came ashore at Ballast Point, the first European landing in what is now California. The Kumeyaay called the peninsula Amat Kunyily, black earth, and the Spanish named it La Punta de la Loma, hill point. For decades the bayside beach at La Playa served as San Diego’s port, where sailors in the 1830s stacked cattle hides for export. The lighthouse on the tip was first lit on November 15, 1855, but at 422 feet above the sea its beam was so often lost in fog that a new light replaced it in 1891. Around 1900 the Theosophists built Lomaland on the hilltop and planted the eucalyptus that still shades it, now the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University, and the Navy, here since its coaling station of 1901, still holds the southern tip.
