Ocean Beach was Mussel Beach until 1887, when developers Billy Carlson and Albert Higgins renamed it, cut it into lots and built the Cliff House resort, a venture that faltered because downtown was so far away. On July 4, 1913, the Wonderland amusement park opened on the north waterfront with roller coasters, dance pavilions and a menagerie, only to close by 1916 after storms and the pull of Balboa Park’s exposition. In 1966 came the 1,971-foot pier, then the longest concrete pier in the world; today it is closed to the public and planned for replacement. OB earned its nickname as the Haight-Ashbury of San Diego, opened one of the first leash-free dog beaches in the country in 1972, and in 2001 organized to keep a chain coffee shop off Newport Avenue, now the Ocean Beach Antique District.
