Rancho Bernardo was planned from the ground up. San Diego annexed it in February 1962, AVCO Community Developers built it out until 1984, and the Rancho Bernardo Inn opened at its centre in 1963. It lies about 20 miles north-northeast of downtown, between Carmel Mountain Ranch, Poway and Escondido, with Lake Hodges close by and business parks that are home to companies from Petco to Sony.
