Mobile IV Therapy on Mission Bay, San Diego
Mission Bay began as a shifting maze of lagoons, marsh and tidal bay that Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo named Bahía Falsa, False Bay, in 1542, and at least three native villages lived off it before Europeans arrived. The San Diego River wandered between here and San Diego Bay; an Army Corps of Engineers dike built in 1852 failed within two years, and in 1877 the city built a permanent dam. The name Mission Bay came from an 1888 poem by Rose Hartwick Thorpe. In 1944 a chamber of commerce committee proposed turning the marsh into a recreation center, and from the late 1940s dredges moved 25 million cubic yards of sand and silt to shape its islands, coves and beaches. The result, Mission Bay Park, spans 4,235 acres of land and water, the largest man-made aquatic park in the country, and on September 25, 1974, it hosted the first modern race to be called a triathlon.
