Long before the tech campuses, Sorrento Valley was Ystagua, a Kumeyaay village whose name means “larvae house.” It was lived in continuously from as early as 1800 BCE, reached about 200 people around 1700, and worked as a center for toolmaking, food processing and trade, with workshops east of today’s Sorrento Valley Road and homes to the west. The Portolá expedition passed through in 1769 and noted how well the valley could be farmed, and Spanish missionaries called it Ranchería de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. In the 1880s the California Southern Railroad was laid through the valley by Chinese laborers who had earlier built the Central Pacific. Interstate 5 arrived in the 1960s and 1970s, bringing offices and labs, and the valley grew into one of the region’s centers for biotech and technology. More than 5,000 people now live here as well, in three residential developments.
