From Hohokam canals to Old Town

Phoenix grew from the canals of the Hohokam, who farmed the Salt River Valley for more than a thousand years and had left it by 1450. In November 1867 Jack Swilling, a Confederate veteran, saw the old ditches, formed the Swilling Irrigating and Canal Company and began digging them out again. Darrell Duppa is usually credited with the name Phoenix, for a town reborn on the ruins of an older one. The city incorporated in 1881 and took the territorial capital from Prescott in 1889. To the east, in 1888, the Army chaplain Winfield Scott bought 640 acres where Old Town Scottsdale now stands, at $3.50 an acre. Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the dam that bears his name in 1911, and air conditioning in the 1950s turned a valley of cotton, citrus and cattle into a metro. Phoenix alone now has more than 1.6 million people.
