Middleton is the oldest settlement in Canyon County. It took its name from sitting midway between Old Fort Boise and Keeney’s Ferry, a resting point for Oregon Trail travelers headed for the river crossing. William N. Montgomery parceled out the first land in 1863; a stage station followed, then a post office in 1866 and a water-powered grist mill in 1871. In 1872 the Boise River flooded and cut a new channel that left the town stranded on an island, so after 1880 the settlement moved to a new site. Middleton incorporated in 1910, though its certificate of incorporation was not issued until 1971. It has grown fast since, from 2,978 people in 2000 to 9,425 at the 2020 census, on the north side of the Boise River between Caldwell and Star.
