Maple Grove–Franklin takes its name from the crossing of Maple Grove Road and Franklin Road on Boise’s West Bench, the broad terrace west of downtown. Before it was a Boise neighborhood it was a country school district of its own: the old Maple Grove schoolhouse stood on the southeast corner of Franklin and Maple Grove until the district was annexed into Boise’s schools on May 18, 1949, and a new Maple Grove School opened on South Maple Grove Road in 1968. Most of the houses here went up between 1970 and 1999. Around them the West Bench became the city’s largest planning area, home to nearly 70,000 people, about 29 percent of Boise, in 2010, and since 2000 it has taken more than a fifth of all new homes built in the city, with Boise Towne Square as its shopping hub and Garden City, Meridian and Eagle along its edges.
