Mobile IV Therapy on the Boise Bench, Idaho

The Bench is the raised terrace south of the Boise River, a dry landmark that Oregon Trail travelers skirted and that stayed empty until irrigation came. In 1877 William B. Morris, manager of a stage line, claimed more than 7,000 acres and began a canal on the first bench above the river’s south bank. He died the next year, and in 1889 his heirs sold the canal, by then called the Ridenbaugh. The New York Canal, finished in 1900, brought a rush of settlers by 1903. In 1913 the Idaho Traction Company’s Hillcrest Loop carried streetcars up over the mesa, and in 1925 Union Pacific’s new depot and main line were under construction on the rim. The city began buying land for today’s airport in 1936, Army crews trained there on B-17 and B-24 bombers during World War II, and Vista joined the city in 1962 and 1964.
