Black Friday Survival Guide
Updated: September 25, 2026 · Reviewed by Taylor J. Graber, MD
Whether you love it or leave it, it's hard to ignore: Black Friday is a fixture of the holiday shopping season.
Black Friday refers to the big sales stores and retailers offer around Thanksgiving weekend in preparation for holiday shopping. Over the years it's become something of a spectator sport, drawing everything from overnight camping outside stores to sprinting through the aisles. Opinions vary widely on this kind of seasonal shopping, but there are now plenty of alternatives that make gift shopping both easy and affordable.
Keep reading for tips on surviving the holiday shopping rush.
Black Friday
For the hardcore traditionalists gearing up for early-morning doorbusters: make a plan, pick out the best sales for your must-have items, and bring a friend to help pass the time in line. Pack a big coffee cup, stock your bag with snacks, or — if you're a pro — follow up your shopping marathon with an IV appointment to help you recalibrate after a long day on your feet.
Small Business Saturday
The holiday season is one of the best times to shop locally and support small businesses in your community. What could be more thoughtful than introducing a loved one to a business you truly believe in? With social media and the internet, virtually every small business has a digital storefront that makes them easy to support from anywhere.
Consider shopping small this season, and thinking of alternatives to the big box stores. (And yes, we're biased — but for anyone in San Diego, Phoenix/Scottsdale, the Bay Area, or Boise, an IV appointment makes a thoughtful gift too.)
Cyber Monday
What could be better than shopping for your favorite people from the comfort of your couch? This can include both small businesses and your favorite larger retailers. Bulk ordering can save on shipping costs and be more environmentally friendly — brainstorm your list ahead of time so you're ready to check out efficiently.
Giving Tuesday
Finally, it's the season of giving — Giving Tuesday is devoted to supporting your favorite charities and nonprofits. Think of a group whose work you value, and consider making a contribution or sharing their resources with your network.
