What does “self care” look like?

“Self-care” is a term we hear thrown a lot—but it’s not always clear what it means. That’s probably because it looks different for every person, and can vary a lot based on circumstances. However, even though it may be hard to define, it is nevertheless very important for avoiding burnout and maintaining balance in your life.

Below, we’ve included some ideas for both daily practices and “splurge” ideas that will help you feel like your best self.

Daily Self-Care

  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Water is the most basic of human needs (especially in the summer heat!), and dehydration can take a toll on your body really quick. Start your day with a big glass of water, or set a daily water goal to avoid headaches and fatigue throughout the day!

  • Get moving. Though exercise might not be possible (or desirable) each day, some sort of movement can boost endorphins and improve mental clarity. This can look like a quick walk, stretches, or a session at the gym.

  • Prioritize the things that are important to you each day, and stick to it. Create a list! Focus on what matters most to you (and keep it reasonable!) and don’t stress if those lower priorities have to be pushed to a later time. When you are strategic about how you spend your time and energy, it both reduces stress and boosts your efficiency.

  • Connect with people who are important to you! Call a loved one, send a friend a text, or check in with your therapist.

Splurges

  • Vacations and special outings like restaurants, concerts or sporting events can be great for our mental health and human connection. Having something to look forward to is a great motivator, and indulging in something you enjoy can alleviate daily stressors you may encounter.

  • Spa treatments or massages can be other great splurges that are both fun to get, as well as beneficial to your physical body.

  • Finally, though hydration is definitely a daily goal, IV therapy can also be a great boost to your physical health! Whether you’re recovering from a long week or gearing up for something important, an IV is an excellent way to care for your body.
